After the horrendous events of September 11, 2001, the United States entered Afghanistan to seek justice against those who had perpetrated the awful deed against America and its citizens. Eventually, the Bush administration decided that Iraq had been involved in the action as well, and had weapons of mass destruction that needed to be found and dismantled. Estimates about the cost of such a war were bantered about and Lawrence Lindsey, the director of President Bush's National Economic Council predicted that the cost of an Iraq War would be approximately $100 to $200 billion when all was said and done. The White House and the Defense Department discounted these figures believing them outrageously high, and went ahead with plans to invade Iraq (Wallsten & Kosec, 2006). Needless to say, the Bush administration was sorely mistaken about the cost and the economic ramifications.
