When the Internet began to make its way into the business world, it was touted by early proponents as the great equalizer. The Internet, it was said, would enable small companies to cost-effectively create a Web presence comparable to competitors who were twice, three times, or even 10 times their size. But what these proponents did not mention was that not only would the Internet afford smaller companies the same opportunities as big established players, but it also would create some challenges that would be the same for all companies big and small.
"Take 3Com Inc. and Lightwave Microsystems Corp., for example. 3Com is a multibillion-dollar provider of networking technology and products employing more than 9,000 people worldwide. Lightwave Microsystems, a privately held designer and manufacturer of lightwave circuits and integrated devices for advanced optical communications systems, employs 325 people. When you talk about resources, the two companies are worlds apart. But when it comes to migrating their enterprise systems into the e-business arena, the two companies are facing the same difficulties, primarily finding a solution that addresses the full spectrum of e-business requirements, including both supply and market-facing applications."
