This paper explains that the resonance of sorrow and tattering of the WWI conflict had not long faded into the background of the French consciousness when the threat of yet another invasion encircled the nation. No other nation had suffered the same debilitating losses as that of the French. The social and psychological implication of such a series of events, the author stresses, was enormous, shifting the collective worldview of all those involved and plunging the nation into a profound depression. The paper describes the ways that the people turned inward and began seeking the recognition of the individual rather than the whole in order to heal their broken psyche

From the Paper:

"Individual economic factors appeared largely unaffected by the war and France continued its stuttered and safe growth post 1919 up to the depression era in 1931.The slow forward movement served to give the impression of prosperity in France through out the 1920's. This vision was far from the truth; the war transformed the Franc into one of the unstable currencies in the world, the public treasury was heavily drained due to the war and national/international debt and no monies flowed inward to repair the problem."
