Description:

This paper briefly examines the causes and the consequences of drunk driving with reference to statistics provided by the National Commission Against Drunk Driving. The paper shows how both the causes and the effects of drunk driving are created through many different variables, which contribute to this dangerous problem being so very difficult to address. The paper asserts that the only successful conclusion is to make all drivers aware that they might not recognize the fact that they are drunk, and that after a preset amount of alcohol, they absolutely must not get behind the wheel of a car for almost six hours.

From the Paper:

"The causes of drunk driving are varied, and this makes addressing them in a productive manner more difficult. Obviously, the primary reason that people have been driving drunk is that they have ingested a significant quantity of alcohol and have gotten behind the wheel of a car. Yet the factors that contribute to drunk driving are more complex: How, for example, is it classified as "drunk driving" when the driver of the vehicle has had only a single beer? To the layman, in most cases the ingestion of one beer would not constitute a crime, and the driver might not actually believe that the alcohol had physically impaired them when they started driving. However, the federal government has recently pushed for a mandatory blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08, which is caused by an ingestion of an extremely low quantity of alcohol. For example, a woman who has a body mass of a hundred and ten pounds would most likely have a BAC of .08 after only one and a half beers."
