Description:
This paper first explains that San-O Sweep, a local janitorial supply distribution company, did not give the attention required in the analysis and design phases of system's development for its new customer ordering software. Next, the author analyzes how information gathering techniques and design methods failed in this case. The paper concludes that this case underscores that improper analysis at the beginning of a project makes it virtually impossible for the subsequent phases of system design and implementation to be carried out in any meaningful way.

From the Paper:
"Gathering information is the first and arguably the primary task of the analysis phase of system development--without it, no analysis and no further development can take place. Essentially, what must occur in the information-gathering phase of system development is a determination of the system requirements--"all of the capabilities and constraints that the new system must meet." This seems simple enough in the case of San-O Sweep--they needed a system that would allow their customers to place orders with the company over the Internet and that would notify the company of the specifics of the order. This understanding of the requirements is, however, far too simplistic and is unfortunately where the team at San-O Sweep stopped."A great deal of information from all stake holders--customers, in-house system users, and possibly even suppliers--is needed to perform a proper analysis of system requirements. Techniques such as questionnaires and interviews can be utilized to ensure full input from all system users during this phase, making it far more effective. Very few of the available techniques were utilized by San-O Sweep during the rather loosely defined analysis phase of their system development, however, and this showed in their ultimate system design."
