Description:

This paper discusses ethical issues in international business. It discusses the importance of educating employees about international business and customs outside the U.S. The paper presents a case study in the form of an email correspondance that discusses a particular incident in international business, why it became an issue and how the situation can best be handled by all involved.

From the Paper:

"Sara's situation, however, does make it necessary for me to reemphasize the need for better education for all our people who will be serving our bank and our customers outside the U.S. The Saudis are just now loosening the restrictions of women in business. Progress for gender equality, especially in Asia and Latin America are moving ahead, but extremely slowly. We are, in fact, guests in these nations and we cannot impose our values- however moral and ethical they may seem- upon others. Sad to say, but we simply have to put our business relationships ahead of Sara's personal feelings. We need to tell her that she continues to be a most valuable employee, but she simply may be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sad to say, Tom, but sometimes we must put the good of the company ahead of our personal feelings and beliefs. It doesn't make us unethical, but it does occasionally make me feel guilty when perhaps, I really have little to feel guilty about."
