From the Paper:

"Strategic Planning is a fluid and ongoing process for any successful business, large or small. It is the vision of the organization, and allows one to look at the broader trends affecting the internal and external environment of a business so that tactical planning can occur. Within the organizational framework, there are several areas of planning that are necessary to provide information and resultant proactive and positive action: strategic, tactical, operational, and contingency planning. We will first define each area, and then comment on particular types of sources that are appropriate to glean such types of information. Of course, specific industries have specific needs, and specific sources, but it is possible to make some general statements about the subject from a managerial and planning aspect. The old adage, "If you fail to plan, you will plan to fail," is quite true when dealing with ways of obtaining and translating information into the planning process. Even small businesses should avail themselves to the planning cycle, their plans may not have the depth of information, nor require the time and resources, but they will nevertheless be invaluable in attaining business success ("The Importance of Planning")."
