"A bed & breakfast (B&B) is best described as a hybrid between a five-star luxury resort and a private home. A B&B typically has 5 to 15 rooms with an additional touch of personality as the owners typically live on the premises to personally entertain their guests. B&Bs continue to grow in popularity as more and more of the inns have open for business; in 1980 there were approximately 1,000 B&Bs in the U.S. hosting 1 million guests and in 2000 that number grew to 28,000 B&Bs serving 50.5 million guests. The way a B&B best differentiates itself from the chain hotel is by providing the amenities standard hotels provide and a long list of additional amenities that are inclusive of the room rate, such as luxury bedding and linens, bath robes, premium toiletries, Spa tubs, hosting events for their guests, such as teas, wine tastings and home-cooked breakfast. The rates for B&Bs is fairly stable, no matter how upscale your amenities or how desirable your location, your rates will have to be in line with other B&Bs and lodgings in your area."
