Description:

This paper analyzes and discusses the characters in Anna Deavere Smith's book, "Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992." According to the paper, some are sympathetic, some disdainful, and some horribly callous, yet all have some connection to the Rodney King case and the Los Angeles Riots. The paper further describes characters who are perpetrators of violence and mayhem, victims of the unrest, jurors who sat on the trial of the police officers accused of beating King, the defendant police officers themselves, politicians, store owners and others who got caught up directly and indirectly in the milieu.

From the Paper:

"There is a variety of characters in Anna Deavere Smith's book, Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992. Some are sympathetic, some disdainful, and some horribly callous, yet all have some connection to the Rodney King case and the Los Angeles Riots. These characters include perpetrators of violence and mayhem, victims of the unrest, jurors who sat on the trial of the police officers accused of beating King, the defendant police officers themselves, politicians, store owners and others who got caught up directly and indirectly in the milieu. None of these characters stand out more in my mind than Reginald Denny due in part to the video I saw of him during the horrible beating he endured as a result of the "not guilty" verdict in the King case."
