This paper reviews Chinua Achebe's "Anthills of the Savannah', a novel which describes the deterioration and collapse of political order in the fictional African nation of Kangan. According to the paper, the focus of the novel is on the complex relationships between one-time school friends - Sam, Christopher and Ikem - and how these have changed as a consequence of Sam's assuming the office of President in a military coup. This paper sees these relationships as exploring some of the major themes in modern African politics, with a particular focus on the role of personal rule in the institutional collapse of many postcolonial African states.
