Description:

The paper examines Donald T. Phillip's work, "Lincoln On Leadership", which is a study of how the leadership ideals of President Lincoln can be adapted to management techniques and approaches in this day and age. The paper points out the real implication of the book: A strong vision and clear and fair communication are the most powerful tools that a leader has to rule with. The paper also notes that the author does seem to come off as over-heroizing Lincoln at times, but this should not be of any consequence to the reader.

From the Paper:

"The first chapter, for instance, talks about Lincoln's inclination to visit the scene and find out what is going on, putting that forth as a management technique that Lincoln was exemplifying, as far as trying to stay connected to and in touch with the workplace (Phillips, p. 13), as far as knowing what is going on down in the trenches, or on the floor, with the workers or subordinates, as it were for Lincoln in particular. The chapter charts the movements of Lincoln, and shows the high amount of movement and visitation of Lincoln among the troops. This brings up another essential organization element: morale, which Lincoln kept very high among the soldiers with its frequent visits of the scene that was the battlefield. The book reveals how invigorating to the soldiers was Lincoln's presence, and the same way today that managers today continue to stay on the floor and stay involved in the hands on operational aspects of the organization is the powerful point of this chapter, and an underlying theme for the entire book."
