Description:

The paper reviews chapters 6-8 of "Business Data Communications and Networking" that focus on Local Area Networks (LANS), Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANS) and Backbone networks. The paper describes how each chapter begins with a description of what is going to be discussed, followed by an in-depth look at the topic and a concise summary, and asserts that this structure is helpful to the reader. The paper also maintains that these chapters provide an excellent overview of the main components, functions and advantages of LANs, WLANs and backbone networks.

From the Paper:

"Chapter 6 begins with a discussion about why the use of a LAN is important. The two primary reasons given for using a LAN are information sharing (software and data sharing) and resource sharing (hardware sharing). One of the most interesting parts of chapter 6 is the section titled "A Day in the Life of the LAN Administrator." This vignette offered an inside look into what a LAN administrator encounters, and in doing so, it helped to clarify the importance of the chapter as a whole. There is a lot more "investigating" and "identifying" involved in being a LAN administrator than I would have predicted before reading this chapter, so I found this information to be fresh and very helpful.
"Also appealing was the way in which the chapter broke down the six different elements of a LAN network; not just naming them, but actually describing them in depth. The use of illustrations to supplement the text, such as Figure 6.1 on page 203, made the information easy to follow and absorb. This type of illustration-text compatibility was also helpful in chapters 7 and 8. That is definitely one thing that all of the chapters had in common is that every detail was explained, rather than just throwing out a list of words or concepts with no explanation."
