Description:

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the book "Bordering on Chaos: Guerrillas, Stockbrokers, Politicians, and Mexico's Road to Prosperity" by Andres Oppenheimer. Specifically it discusses two crises in Mexican history, the Mexican Revolution, between 1910 and 1917 and Zapatista Rebellion in the 1990s. The paper looks at how the book describes the two crises as well as their similarities and differences.

From the Paper:

"The Mexican Revolution that began in 1910 was really two revolutions in one, the author asserts. One was fought by professionals and others from the middle class, and it was waged against the government, while the other was the one led by Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata, guerilla leaders how wanted social justice, land rights, and local governing (Oppenheimer 101). This revolution was not successful, as Villa and Zapata were both killed, resulted in changes in the government. It also led to the formation of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (Partido Revolucionario Institucional - PRI), the political party that had ruled Mexico since 1929. The author notes, "For many decades, successive Mexican governments had adopted a rewritten history of the Mexican Revolution that made Zapata and Villa - the rebel leader who had not only lost on the battlefield but were killed in the process - look as if they had been part of the winning team" (Oppenheimer 102).
