Description:

This paper provides a review Alan Sears' work "Retooling the Mind Factory - Education in a Lean State." The paper notes that the book explained what is faulty in revised Ontario education dating from the 1990s in an orientation of training for the new globalized economy as opposed to genuine education. He spells out well known difficulties of limited access to higher education, the rise of an Education industry, new attitudes towards work, child raising and all matters of consumerism. However, Sears fails to recommend a strong solution.

"Alan Sears's study of neo-liberalism's influence on Education refers to a previous environment in what he describes as the `broad welfare state' of the 1940s through to the 1970s. Increasingly, education has given way to the needs of the `lean state' of restructuring according to the stress on capitalist aims that is part of globalization. Like other fields within the realm of human services, education has changed to reflect needs of aggrandizing wealth and profit, what does not conform to this leading goal ..."
