The essay also provides an overview of the topics discussed in Friedman's book, namely the debate between historians, scholars and religious fundamentalists regarding the author(s) of the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Pentateuch. It outlines the views of many religious scholars and fundamentalists who believe that Moses was the sole author of the Pentateuch, and then outlines the views of Friedman, who attests that the first five books were written by several authors. The essay finds that this book is an informative read, especially for those without a heavy religious background.

From the Paper:

"Friedman first reviews the time periods: 1200 to 722 B.C., 722 to 587 B.C., and 587 to 400 B.C. Biblical history starts with the conquest of Canaan prior to 1200 B.C. when the Israel tribes establish a confederation, and the histories of the tribes of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses are handed down orally throughout the generations. The tribes are then united under King David and the author "J." begins to tell his stories that describe the beginning of the universe and tribes and the relationship with God that emphasizes morality, action and reward/punishment of the heroes to man in general. After Solomon dies, the kingdom divides with Judah in the south and Israel/Ephraim in the north. "J" writes about the south and Jerusalem and the north cover sacrifices and focus on Moses. "
