The paper examines the ideas in "A New Deal for Blacks" by Harvard Sitkoff and discusses the author's main theme that the New Deal played an important role in providing civil rights for Blacks and removing them from the clutches of slavery. The paper looks at how Sitkoff describes the events during this period that led to change and how he defines the civil rights agenda promoted by black and white liberals. This writer posits that Sitkoff has conducted a thorough research and his stated objectives are completely accomplished.
From the Paper:"Harvard Sitkoff's book A New Deal for Blacks made a very strong impact in terms of addressing the African American struggle that was a series of events during the 1930s and 1940s. According to Sitkoff, the accomplishments relative to the work carried out by individuals and organizations for equality and racial justice during the New Deal laid the foundation for the civil rights movement in America. Blacks were included in the New Deal curriculums such as Public Works Administration, Works Progress Administration and the National Youth Administration. However, Sitkoff notes that the New Deal did not entirely succeed in abolishing the killing of Blacks and did not improve upon their legal, social and economic standing. But the author holds that the New Deal played a major role in providing Blacks with immense influence in the federal government for addressing their apprehensions. It also included civil rights into the agenda of the Democratic Party. Moreover, the New Deal provided considerable hope to them as the federal government started paying attention to their cause, which was being entirely ignored for several decades (Sitkoff, 1978)."
