The paper outlines the five parts of the book "A Hero of Our Time" that provides us with a personal account of Russia, from a soldier's perspective, during the early 1800s. The paper shows how the book paints a picture of a normal day during this time period for a soldier like Pechorin.
From the Paper:"Lermontov seems to paint us a vivid picture of life in Russia in the early 19th century. His book, "A hero of Our Times", is a sort of journal into the thoughts of the hero of this book, Pechorin. Lermontov put this novel together by basically using five separate short stories and putting them together in the same book. Each individual short story tells a little bit about the hero, Pechorin, and his thoughts and travels. Three of the short stories, in this book, are taken directly from Pechorin's private journals. This book does not have a distinct plot that links each of the five parts of the book together. Each of the five parts of this book seem to describe Pechorin a little bit more as you read further into the book. Lermontov choose to put the last three sections of the book as Pechorin's personal journal entries, so that you could get a feeling of how he really thinks and feels by the end of the novel. Because of this format, the novel does not follow a chronological order, but it does a better job at letting you get to know Pechorin and his dark side."
