Description:

The paper relates that the nursing process is almost sacred and is equated with clinical judgment. The paper then discusses how Henderson (1982) and Tanner (2006) both argue that this situation is misguided and that the nursing process must be changed. The paper explains that the root problem they address is that the nursing process does not reflect how nurses think. The paper shows how the main theses of the two articles are very much alike. Henderson (1982) argues that the nursing process is not the only process used by nurses and nor is it used only in nursing but instead is intended to be used by all health care providers when problem solving skills are involved, and the nursing process needs to be changed. The paper then explains how Tanner's (2006) main thesis is similar in that the nursing process actually has nothing in common with clinical judgment and it does not relate to the type of judgment used by nurses in practice, especially in terms of complexity.
