"While Bartholomae is correct that university professors have power, while students need to bow to that power by learning and using the appropriate discourses, it is also true that children learning the language are in the same position of relative powerlessness vis-a-vis their parents. It is incumbent upon them to enter into the discourses of their parents, on their parents' terms, in order to be understood. Thus, it would seem that there is no reason to single out university contexts for this reality.
