This paper first explains that, according to an article by A.S. Canagarajah, social, political and economic factors cannot be divorced from second language teaching (ESL); thereby, there is not one sole way of approaching second language teaching and that the approach should not be derived solely from the English-speaking world. Next, the author reacts to a second article by Pauline Gibbons underscoring that, because of globalization and diversity, teachers, even of mainstream content, will have to take into consideration the needs of second language students in their classroom. The paper expresses the author's support of scaffolding in the mainstream classroom with or without second language students.

"I do understand that the demands of a full-time teacher never seem to cease and that it makes sense that teachers, especially mainstream teachers whom do not "consider" themselves as second language instructors, might be apprehensive when told that they need to be more reflective and more detailed in their planning. However, to me, it is not an option. I will, indeed, when I make lesson plans take into consideration the abilities of my students and then chunk the lesson in stages so that each and every student has the opportunity to truly learn. In fact, I anticipate that the time put into scaffolding at the front end or the planning stage is recouped many times over since when a student learns the material the correct way the first time, there is less time spent in re-teaching students as a group as well as tutoring those students individually who seek additional help and remediation upon failing a particular test or not understanding a homework assignment. I did not decide to go into teaching to take the easy way out or to deny the needs of my students; I am here to make sure they get what they need."
