Description:
This paper is a summary, synthesis and analysis of six related readings on the issue of health and health promotion. The paper shows how the readings provide a varied perspective on health promotion, and notes that one continually reiterated point is that the Ottawa Charter formulated the principles of health promotion and proposed strategies for implementation. The paper highlights how it is clear that health promotion involves diversity and equity, and that the task of health promotion occurs at all levels, from the personal to community and federal level.
From the Paper:
"The readings provide a varied perspective on health promotion. One continually reiterated point is that the Ottawa Charter formulated the principles of health promotion and proposed strategies for implementation. Although preoccupation with the Charter is criticized, it does contain a depth of meaning in its brief statements. Above all, the Charter emphasizes that health promotion is not confined to health care, but "puts health on the agenda of policy makers in all sectors and at all levels" (WHO, 1986, p. 54). The readings illustrate how health promotion is viewed and implemented on each level."Concurrent with the Charter, Epp (1986) held that the approach of health promotion would be effective for the three health challenges in Canada, and he presented three mechanisms essential for health promotion, along with the strategies for implementation. The Ministry of Health (1993) defines health as "the ability of people to function well physically, mentally and socially" (p. 17). Health is dynamic, being dependent on certain variables, and exists on a continuum; health includes both vitality and resilience."
