The paper discusses how Kirby argues that there is a culture of modus vivendi; the primary function of Hong Kong is an imperial place of commerce that was used by the British and the Americans to trade with the east. The paper shows how this dominant colonial aspect is never really discussed in Stuart's article, as it is more so in Borg's data. The paper explains that the obvious thesis of these articles was to propose that Hong Kong is seemingly set-aside as a place of trade, but it is only Borg that goes beyond the patriotic sense of immigration and democratic language that Kirby implies.
