The writer contends that the record labels in the music industry should permit free downloads of their product as the business model of the twentieth century. The writer argues that instead of record labels calling their fans criminal and staging lawsuits, they should listen to their customers, for they are the only reason they exist. The writer then shows how record labels lie about the profits, and reveals that they are making more money than they have ever made, with no financial loss at all from piracy or peer sharing. The writer further maintains that by permitting downloads of their product, labels increase public awareness, garner free publicity and create a demand for their material which may not have existed before. The writer argues that if labels continue to resist, they are conveying that fans mean nothing, that obscene profit is not enough, and that lying about everything from production cost to actual damages is an acceptable way of conducting their business.
From the Paper:"The genie is out of the bottle. The traditional way of delivering music to music fans is dead but the record labels refuse to accept it and mean to go down swinging. They label their fans criminal, they sue, they lie about the profits and they obfuscate the issues. The music industry is alive and thriving. The labels, however, will have to come into the 21st century with the rest of humanity if they want to continue in operation. They are making more money than they have ever made, still, naked greed drives them onward. Enough is never enough. They claim the poor starving artist is beaten out of his rightful share. If that is true it is because of their unorthodox method of computing cost which exaggerates their outlay and shows the latest release made little profit. By permitting downloads of their product they increase public awareness, garner free publicity and create a demand for their material which may not have existed before."
