The paper looks at how Senator Robert Dole of Kansas said "Schools should provide the language classes our immigrants and their families need, as long as their purpose is the teaching of English...But we must stop the practice of multilingual education as a means of instilling ethnic pride or as therapy for low self-esteem or out of elitist guilt over a culture built on the traditions of the West" ("English Only", 2001). The writer agrees with Sen. Dole and the 180 co-sponsors of the bill that would make English only a law. The writer relates that he is frustrated with trying to get goods and services from people who he can't understand. The writer asserts that he lives in the United States which is an English speaking country-when he shops, dines out or makes a telephone call, he wants to hear his language not a foreign secondary language. The writer notes that he won't go as far as to say that bilingual education should come to a screeching halt-he thinks bilingual education is the only way to reaffirm that English is the only language accepted in the United States.
