Description:
This paper argues that financial support for elderly family members should not only be the responsibility of the family, but that government programs should help as well. First, the paper gives statistics about skilled nursing facilities and home health services, highlighting their cost. The financial aspects of caring for the elderly are further highlighted in a chart. Next, the paper discusses the fiscal impact of caring for an aged relative on their family. Then, the paper describes issues faced by elderly when in a protected residence, particularly feeling abandoned by relatives. The paper concludes by noting the importance of giving back to the elderly and respecting their contributions to society. A table is included in the paper.
From the Paper:
"There are approximately fifteen thousand skilled nursing facilities in this country, with three hundred sixty nine thousand three hundred and forty working at those facilities. Four hundred fifty four companies exist that provide Home Health Services. There are forty nine home hospice services, and even one thousand three hundred eighty nine non-medical Home Aide companies."There are approximately 1.3 million elderly in skilled nursing facilities. That is about 17% of the elderly population. Another 1.4 million elderly makes use of Home Health Care services for an average of sixty nine days at a time. These two populations do intertwine somewhat, as many elderly are released from the nursing home and make use of the Home Health Care workers when they return to their own homes.
"Now we can take a quick look at what the most common health care services cost that are used by the elderly. Before we actually look at the table outlining the average national costs, the extended periods of monthly and yearly rates are based off of approximate work days. Monthly, there is generally twenty-two workdays, and yearly there are generally two hundred fifty work days. Not included in this summary are the costs for CCR's, or Community Care Residences, as they are generally used by a portion of the elderly population that does not quite rely upon their Social Security income or Medicare plans."
