Description:

In this article, the writer maintains that second hand smoke can be very harmful in many ways. The writer discusses that given the countless health risks that are associated with passive smoking, workers should not be exposed involuntarily to this kind of smoke. To prevent such exposures, employers should first get rid of workplace smoke at its source. The writer argues that the best way to control worker exposure to second hand smoke is to completely eliminate smoking from the workplace and to implement a smoke-free program. The writer concludes that although banning smoking may result in economic costs such as reduced revenue from tobacco taxation, the health and organizational risks of both active and passive smoking are more costly in the long run than condoning smoking in the workplace.

" Second hand smoke is that which smokers exhale and also the smoke that floats from the end of a cigar, cigarette or pipe. It is the smoke that is passively inhaled by people in the vicinity of someone who is smoking. Passive smoking, Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) or involuntary smoking are terms often used to mean second hand smoking. Non-smokers are exposed to the same chemicals and toxins as the smoker when they inhale second hand smoke.
" Second hand smoke may seem quite harmless, but it actually contains many chemicals; from ammonia and arsenic to hydrogen cyanide, several of which have been proved toxic or cancer causing."
