This paper argues that marriage is a fundamental human right that is universal. It contends that marriage should be viewed as a legal union, rather than a religious one, because it is fundamental to the well-being of all committed couples in that it protects, maintains, and supports the human rights of all people. As such, lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered people should have the right to marry.

Marriage - A Fundamental Human Right

From the Paper:

"Religious beliefs have permeated and shaped America's laws and culture, thus negatively impacting the lives and rights of millions of people throughout American history. Women, for example, were denied their right to vote because of the biblical notion of male superiority (1 Corinthians 11:3; Ephesians 5:23), thus making her insubordinate to man and in need of his authority. Indeed, Barnes notes on the Bible state, "And the head of the woman is man - The sense is, she is subordinate to him, and in all circumstances - in her demeanor, her dress, her conversation, in public and in the family circle - should recognize her subordination to him" (Biblos, 2011). Such notions resulted in women being forbidden or refused entry into numerous societal domains, thus significantly impeding female participation in politics, the labor market, and so forth. Today, the lives of women are still impacted by such long-term notions and beliefs. "
