Description:

This paper explains that the US has a long history, even before the War of Independence, of debating gun ownership and this even appears in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. Next, the author illustrates that pro-gun enthusiasts always argue that the Second Amendment only means the second part of this statement yet they do not look at today's demographic and statistical evidence that indicates that guns are a serious societal problem. The paper concludes that the Second Amendment says that it is alright to own guns but it also says that stricter laws limiting civilian ownership and types of guns are permissible.

From the Paper:

"Another argument pro-gun enthusiasts would state is that having guns will deter criminals from committing crimes because the mere fact they know their victims might have guns is already scary for them. They will even point out some state's conceal carry laws where crime supposedly went down. Again this is not really looking at the whole picture and all the demographic and statistical evidence. It is the same argument during the time when Bernard Goetz shot four robbers in a New York City subway in December 1994. Subway ro9bberies decreased by 43% in the next week, compared to two weeks prior to the incident."
