From the Paper:
"With all these rights and positive benefits, why are people considering marriage old-fashion and ill fated in today's society? It is because the changes in today's society happen more quickly than the changes in marriage, such as gay unions and gay marriage. I imagine some people would boycott a "typical" marriage because there are people that don't have the right to marry their significant other. Values are changing as well. In Hekker's article The Satisfaction of Housewifery and Motherhood, Hekker talks about her daily everyday struggles with being a housewife and mother which was common back in her era, but receiving no respect from her family after the '80's feminist movement because they didn't "want to be like Aunt Terry."(pg. 126) In '70s and '80s, it became socially acceptable and in the norm for women to go to work, earns wages like the men and juggle motherhood, the home care responsibility, and their workload. While I don't believe all women need to be a housewife for marriages to work (because Hekker's marriage does not last, in the end), I believe that responsibilities need to be split, like in The Marriage Agreement by Alix Kates Shulman (pg. 178). While women will (arguably) always have more tasks to do, splitting up some of these jobs among the spouses will help the marriage survive because hopefully, one spouse will not be more stressed than the other. Even when the woman is a housewife, the responsibilities should still be split because despite what modern people may think, it is a full-time job to raise children and keep up a house."Sample of Sources Used:
