The paper offers a brief overview of the year round education system (YRE) with a view to understanding the pros and cons of such a reform. The paper explains the factors that have driven schools into trying the year round schedule as opposed to the traditional nine-month academic year with three months of summer break. The paper further explains that some believe that this system benefits the students in better assimilation and retention of information but also improves the working condition of the teachers. The paper then turns to the disadvantages that involve administrative burnout, cost of air-conditioning and ruined family vacations. The paper concludes that the educational outcome for YRE and traditional system does not seem to differ much and research has not shown any conclusive evidence favoring YRE.
