This paper examines the Canadian experience of World Ware I, which is sometimes discussed as a dividing issues rather than the strong unifier of national consciousness that the conflict proved, through it course, and in the aftermath. Canadians responded as members of the British Empire but soon demonstrated in action their differences, a colonial people who by the end were recognized as a Nation, a signatory of the Versailles Treaty of 1918 in recognition of 600,000 men and women to make remarkable contributions; afterwards, knowledge of a WW1 veteran or casualty, as well as Canadian achievements abroad, was a shared element of national culture and identity.

On August 4^th 1914, Britain declared war on Germany after the latter's invasion of Belgium and as a constituent of the then British Empire, Canada was at war.
