This paper describes the historic and contemporary problems experienced by the California condor, North America's largest land bird. The paper relates that for most of the twentieth century, the numbers of condors decreased until a special captive breeding program was implemented. The paper discusses however, how now that the numbers have risen, the birds are threatened by the spread of lead poisoning due to lead ammunition used by hunters.

"The California condor became part of the endangered species list in 1967, the first year such a list was published. At that time, the population of these large birds of prey was estimated to be approximately 55 ("Milestones in California Condor Conservation"). California condors are native to North America and live in the Western regions of the continent in the United States. The birds are part of the vulture family and are the largest land bird in North America. This species of birds had a difficult time surviving during the early and mid-twentieth century, and much funding and zoological support went into helping the species repopulate..."
