From the Paper:
"The work of E.E. Cummings is characterized by a gentle use of words in a non-inflammatory style used to showcase the separation and internal rebellion of the individual against the mass society. In finding and supporting the individual, Cummings found the beauty in individuality, in going against the grain. Unlike many of his contemporaries who were strident in their work about the same subject, Cummings took the path of thought that tells us it is ok to be who we are, regardless of what others think. Other writers of the time, such as Eliot and Pound, who saw that the individual was at war with society portrayed individualism as a cause, a political and social movement. Cummings, however, examined the glory of the individual simply within that context. He saw that to be an individual, to celebrate the self, was the highest form of praise to life. Of particular importance to his own individuality, Cummings' verse was punctuated not with the complex symbolism of Eliot, but of the common speech of the common people. Instead of using verbal symbols to help his poems along, Cummings employed visual symbolism in the actual spacing and placement of words and letters upon the page. In so doing, he actually succeeded in making paintings of words of poetry of love and all in a cycle. When read aloud, the poems themselves change not only their shape, but quite often their meaning. What he succeeded in accomplishing was a shift from the broadest possible audience in his effect down to the simplest, that of the single reader."Cite this Analytical Essay:
