Description:

This paper examines the theme of love present in the novels, "Elective Affinities" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and "Persuasion" by Jane Austen. The paper analyzes the protagonists' character and choices to elicit a more in-depth understanding. The paper explains that both books have short but powerful titles that draw the reader to the essence of the story plot. The paper discusses the different ways that both these authors illustrate the theme of love.

From the Paper:

"The two novels Elective Affinities by Goethe and Persuasion by Jane Austen both captured the essence of love and intimacy. The theme of love is strongly present in both these novels, and is illustrated by the protagonists' actions and feelings. Both of these books were written by authors who were opposite in gender, and had different childhood experiences. However, these two literatures question the definition of true love. These books were written in the same time period, but in different locations. Goethe wrote his book in Germany while Austen published hers in England. Nevertheless, they allowed the reader to come to the same conclusion; the power of love occurs naturally and despite hardships of time, it will ultimately prevail. These hardships did not only prolong the final unification of lovers, but strengthened the bond that existed between them. By analyzing these two classic novels, love is seen to be one of many important factors that contribute to not only the plot of the novel, but the development of happiness within the characters. Austen and Goethe use their mastery in literature to convey this theme through the story plot, literary devices, as well as the styles and technique of the book."
