Description:

The paper relates that masculinity can present a problem for how males relate to one another, but it has to be observed in context with other circumstances. The paper then discusses how one of the very important themes of "The Merchant of Venice" is friendship between the two males, Antonio and Bassanio. The paper describes how the play begins with the problem of money, which is important because it ends with one friend being ready to make the ultimate sacrifice for the other. The paper then looks at how in "Dinner with Trimalchio", Fortunata, Trimalchio's wife "counts her money by the sackful" (Petronius 57), and shows how part of the problem is opulence which makes genuine friendship impossible. In addition, the paper discusses how in Petronius' work, sexual attraction and behavior are more important than forming deep bonds or understanding others. The paper relates that married men are sexually involved with boys but this does not threaten masculinity since such practices are fully accepted as the norm.
