Description:

This paper provides a definition of conflict and a series of steps that shows how conflicts are born and develop. The writer explains the increasing need for managers who are able to address conflict in the workplace, since it lowers productivity and morale. Different types of conflict require different methods of handling, and the writer describes some of the skills needed for conflict competence as well as five types of conflict management. The paper concludes that since conflict is a natural component of every interpersonal relationship, it is important to create a conflict-competent culture that recognizes conflict as soon as it happens and involves people who know what to do and how to handle it effectively.

From the Paper:

"Whether it relates to tasks, processes or individual personalities, conflict can be a very destructive thing. Cinnie Noble writes that conflicts have a marked negative impact on productivity, morale and working relationships, which all leads to a sustained dissension that forces people to act in a negative way because of preconceived ideas and misconceptions. Conflict in the workplace can be caused by a lot of things, such as inadequate staff training, motivation and support in dealing with conflict, an organization that prefers to avoid little conflicts and lets it escalate into bigger conflicts. Noble adds that conflict is a natural thing and should be seen as an avenue to share ideas, build relationships, swap opinions and create solutions (Noble, 2008, p. 14)."
