This paper analyzes the greater human civility of Pi over that of the animal (and human) foes that he encounters on the high seas. The paper discusses how by using his rationality in a practical and educated manner, he ultimately survives the animal ferocity of Richard Parker. Also, the paper looks at how he uses his civilized demeanor when retelling his story to the unbelieving Japanese authorities, which forces him to tell a lie in order to abate the irrationality of their distrust in him.
