Description:

This paper discusses the play "The Glass Menagerie," by Tennessee Williams, focusing on its character as a memory. The writer gives a brief description of the playwright's life, explaining that many of his plays, particularly "The Glass Menagerie," are autobiographical, and shows parallels between this play and Williams' own experiences. The writer examines the social background of the play, as well as the social world within which each member of the Wingfield family lives. Since the play is a memory, what is seen on stage is not the current action, but some previous action, which highlights the separation of the characters from, and their struggle with, the real world. This paper contains figures.

From the Paper:

"The Wingfields are not a well off family. The father left the family years ago, forcing Tom to become the head of the household far too early. Tom is the only member of the family who has a job. He works in a shoe warehouse and hates it and makes $65 a month to support three people. Laura is too shy and unsure of herself to hold a job for long or even train for vocational skills as we learn in Scene 2 during her fight with her mother about her leaving business college without telling anyone because she became so nervous she vomited in front of the whole class."
