Description:

The paper discusses how Aristotle saw the integration of character as important, while Aquinas in his Christian view focused on the notion of free choice and predestination. The paper goes on to describe how Aristotle, in his classical view, struggled over the notions of morality and virtue, seeing the integration of character as important. The paper then shows how Aquinas, in the Christian view, focused on the notion of free choice and predestination, as well as on trying to demonstrate the existence of God.

From the Paper:

"Throughout history, there have been many different views of life. In the classical world, with the writings of Aristotle, an idea of life is put forward, which focuses on the struggle for morality and virtue through balance and integration of character. Aquinas's view, on the other hand, focuses very much upon the ability of the individual to shape one's own life. The notion of free choice versus predestination is highly important in Aquinas's view of life. Furthermore, Aquinas places great stress upon the existence of God and the manner in which one can prove such existence.
"Aristotle believed that a successful human had to have a fully integrated and orderly personality. Since Aristotle associated success with happiness, he basically meant that happiness came from a fully consolidated character. He was primarily interested in the concept of what he called the "good", which he saw as being that which all things aim at. The "good" and being successful were realities connected to happiness. Happiness, in turn, was the realization of man's essential nature. When a person became cognizant of his own reality, that is when happiness would begin."
