This paper relates that Bruce Riedel in his book "The Search for Al Qaeda: Its Leadership, Ideology, and Future" explains how Al Qaeda developed, delivers clearly Al Qaeda's objectives and strategies and focuses particularly on what has happened to the terrorist network post 9/11. Next, the author examines the writings of the contemporary Egyptian philosopher Sayyid Qutb and his relationship to the Al Qaeda movement. The paper concludes, in agreement with Riedel, that the US has made many mistakes in its warfare against Al Qaeda, especially as regards the conflict of ideas.
From the Paper:"Riedel criticizes the US administration for not focusing on Al-Qaeda particularly rather than on terrorism in general and for mischaracterizing Al-Qaeda motivations. He explains that one of the America's most significant shortcomings in the war is the failure to know the enemy. Riedel clarifies Al Qaeda today as a more hazardous foe than it has been previously. Thanks mainly to Washington's impatience to start a war in Iraq rather than focus on searching for Al Qaeda's leaders, the network now has a solid foundation in Pakistan and a successful franchise in western of Iraq."
