In this article, the writer looks at environmental concerns and discusses why these are perceived by people as being more efficacious in dealing with environmental issues than the ordinary citizen is. The writer maintains that ultimately, people in our contemporary society lack faith that they can make a difference, and this has resulted in governments and other large, corporate entities doing the work - or trying to do the work - that communities, collectively, could easily do themselves.

To wit, if each of us cuts down on electricity use, if each of us turns to composting as a partial solution to the enormous waste generated by our consumer culture, if each of us turns to recycling as a means of maintaining finite resources, and if each of us thinks first of public transit (or car-pooling) instead of purchasing that expensive "hummer" - then the world, as a whole, will be a cleaner place in which to live. Be that as it may, people still rely on government to do their work for them in this regard - just as they rely upon corporations to do their part, environmental groups to do their part, and technology to do its part.
