Description:

The paper briefly discusses Stuart Hall's important work on western conceits vis-a-vis itself and vis-a-vis its relationship to the rest of the world. Specifically, the paper summarizes Hall's arguments and then summarizes the arguments of two other authors, with the intention of showing how Hall's treatment of the power and implications of the Eurocentric, colonial discourse differ to the treatment of the topic by other scholars. In the end, whereas Hall appears to see Euro-centrism and cultural chauvinism as chief causes for European or western imperialism (a view apparently shared to some degree by Bendix), Freund sees pressing economic factors that explain Europe's veering towards international domination and possession.

From the Paper:

"The following paper will briefly discuss Stuart Hall's important work on western conceits vis-a-vis itself and vis-a-vis its relationship to the rest of the world. Specifically, the next several pages will summarize Hall's arguments and then summarize the arguments of two other authors - always with the intention of showing how Hall's treatment of the power and implications of the Eurocentric, colonial discourse differ and/or are similar to the treatment of the topic by other scholars who have devoted their careers to understanding the factors which made colonialism and wide-spread exploitation on continental scales possible."
