Next, the author relates that the need for flexible strategic planning is particularly necessary in healthcare-related fields because of changes in regulations and technology. The paper presents practical suggestions for managing this communication, such as gathering ideas from employees.

"Creating a workforce that is not afraid of change brings the needed flexibility and responsiveness to the external environment. "A critical but often overlooked aspect of strategic management is the need for it to be both planned and unplanned. Company leaders must take the initiative in setting out how the company should function and operate, but they must also be dynamic in responding to needs and requirements as they arise". In a healthcare organization, where all employees must respond to unexpected events on a day-to-day basis, this flexibility must be integrated into the mindset of all employees through effective communication. Potential implementation problems often arise amongst lower-level leaders, when there is confusion regarding the change process and they are unused to change, and how to communicate new objectives. Inadequate communication between different levels of management leads to delays and intransigence, and given 'change resistors' a good excuse to dig their heels in and subvert the strategic planning process."Because of changes in regulation and technology, the need for flexible strategic planning is particularly necessary in healthcare-related fields. Changes in technology and regulation within the industry 'raise the bar' of performance and demand constant strategic monitoring of the external market environment."
