This paper relates that Stalin and Trotsky were two men who wanted to succeed Lenin and that Trotsky the war hero, was the obvious candidate. The paper looks at how although both men had many similarities, Trotsky made several fatal mistakes and was unpopular with the party. It also discusses how Stalin exploited Trotsky's weaknesses and, with a certain amount of scheming, outmaneuvered him completely so that he was left as the supreme ruler of the Soviet Union.

From the Paper:

"In 1924, Lenin died after having been critically ill since 1921, bringing to light the question of who should succeed him. Russia needed a determined man of action with a clear vision for the future as its leader. Trotsky was seen as the most obvious candidate as he had been recommended by Lenin himself - Stalin, on the other hand, was seen to all except Lenin only as a competent administrator, but Lenin had advised that he be dismissed immediately on the basis that he had dictatorial tendencies and was ''too rude''. With this in mind, it seems bizarre that Stalin became the leader of Russia, and leads one to ask why Stalin rather than Trotsky succeeded Lenin. First, the similarities between Trotsky and Stalin shall be discussed, followed by Trotsky's strengths and weaknesses, and finally Stalin's opportunism will be analysed.
"Trotsky and Stalin may have seemed very different at a first glance but in fact they shared many common points, which may help one to realise that it wasn't as unimaginable as it was thought that Stalin would gain leadership."
