The paper looks at the level of modernization and thus globalization in Southeast Asian countries and explains that the growth of a society is based upon the knowledge available to the country. The paper discusses how the development of Southeast Asian countries may be essentially divided into two groups, those in which a large global knowledge base exists, indicative of the adaptation of the globalization trend, and those with a limited knowledge base. The paper points out that in reality, the process of globalization is the spreading of global democracy and capitalism, the direct result being economic success and societal progress.

"Knowledge is being produced in the modern world at a faster rate than ever before, with some being global knowledge, in that it is produced in a foreign nation, and domestic knowledge being termed locally produced knowledge. Locally produced knowledge increases as a society moves towards becoming a knowledge society, as opposed to an agrarian one for example. Social science research production within a society is an accurate gauge as to the level of modernization within the society, due to the prerequisites to said social science research.
