Description:

This paper explores Harriet Jacobs' book "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" and discusses how Jacobs felt she was caged by those that wished to physically possess or belittle her. The paper explores the sexual use of slaves and the negative impact this practice had upon the white society and reveals that the use of slaves for sex helped in the creation of social conditions that destroyed the community.

From the Paper:

"The citation that opens this paper is the original definition that Jacobs uses to express her frustration with her situation and her sadness and anger that these conditions prevail: She writes of her mistress becoming angry with her for no other reason than that she drew the attentions of her husband, and that the anger that the mistress experiences spills out over into the home. When the mistress first finds out about the affair, she asks for Jacobs to tell her all that had occurred. Jacobs, merely sixteen, told her and watched as her mistress wept. But Jacobs soon continues in noting: "[...] I was soon convinced that her emotions arose from anger and wounded pride. She felt that her marriage vows were desecrated, her dignity insulted, but she had no compassion for the poor victim of her husband's perfidy." And, despite promising to protect Jacobs from Mr. Flint, the mistress soon took out her aggressions on the slave community. Through this chain of events, Jacobs notes that it is not only the other slaves that were harmed through this anger but the white community as a whole, where the concept of infidelity within the home worked to drive wedges in the social fabric of men, women, and children."
