This paper briefly analyzes Ronald Reagan's "evil empire" speech presented to the National Association of Evangelicals on March 8, 1983 in Orlando, Florida. It looks at how it was a two-part speech discussing two topics and directed at least two kinds of audience. The paper further examines how the morals and values part were directed at the American people - and probably the world - to let the people rethink their stance on secularism and discusses how the second part was directed towards the Soviet Union to herald that there would be a change sooner or later.
From the Paper:"Indeed, President Reagan was extolling the virtues of maintaining a collective ethos and a belief in the Supreme Being because these beliefs are the very foundation of America. He mentioned quite a few times in his speech how others were against inclusion of God and religion in political and social institutions. But he also mentions to the contrary, how these people can say no to beliefs that held the very foundation of America and the freedom it holds dear. Cases in point he reiterated in his speech were the use of 'In God We Trust' motto in the monetary system of the nation and how elected members of the Congress and appointed Supreme Court Justices open every session with a prayer. President Reagan put out a statement regarding this and it actually ended up a question in each and every one's mind: "I just happen to believe the schoolchildren of the United States are entitled to the same privileges as Supreme Court Justices and Congressmen."
