Description:

In this article, the writer notes that the issues concerning contemporary policing cover a broad range of subjects. Such issues are police professionalism, education of officers, recruitment officer training, officer discretionary behavior, problem-oriented policing and police ethics. The writer points out that the variations of contemporary policing can be illustrated by comparing a large city's police department to a smaller city. The writer discusses how management and organization are extremely important in dealing with these issues and how individual police department's policies and procedures deal with the issues. The writer concludes that not only do police departments have the responsibility to maintain and enforce the law, they must be in tune with the special needs of an ever-changing community.

From the Paper:

"One may assume that an officer who has earned a college degree has a broad education that includes classes that led to enhanced critical thinking skills. This officer is able to do problem solving and is less likely to use force. His interactive speaking skills could enable him to gain cooperation from the public. It is possible that he could apply what he learned in general education classes in a broad way to effectively interact with the community.
"Many cities have challenges among the populace that require special attention from the police department. These particular challenges could involve the police department interacting with citizens to prevent crime such as in problem-oriented policing."
