This paper analyzes the mysterious qualities of several characters in Shakespeare's tragedy, "Othello." The paper begins with a basic plot summary and description of the characters. It also considers the relationships between the characters and how this impacts their development. In particular, the paper focuses on the connection between Othello and Desdemona. The paper concludes by noting that the play itself represents the true nature of man.
From the Paper:"Othello's character carries a blackness that is one with mystery. In fact, his acceptance of an expedition presents this same mystery that he carries with him. One may think whether Othello decides to go to the expedition because he is wise and powerful, and knows where his power resides, which is at sea. Another reason that engages him to go to an expedition may be the fact that he appears to be weak and naive--that he is looking for a way to get out from Brabantio and the danger he faces of being on land. This all the more, intensifies the mystery behind the character of Othello. Yet, however indefinite the character of Othello may seem to be, Iago on the other hand, reflects a more definite and unchangeable character, as evident in the plot of Shakespeare."
