The paper looks at how in "My Name is Red", author Orhan Pamuk crafts a novel featuring a love story, a murder mystery, and most of all, a philosophical examination of the relationship between art and politics in the 16th century Ottoman Empire. The paper explains that the relationship is characterized by Pamuk's novel in terms of the threat Islamic fundamentalists and some establishment authorities in Istanbul perceived in foreign art.
